Dragon Crisis!「REVIEW」

Aww. Isn't that picture simply adorable? In all seriousness though, this is just another of your typical shounen anime with the happy fairy tale ending that we all love complete with your loveable (or very annoying depending on personal tastes) lolita love interest, your average teenage boy, his hormonal friend, well endowed sister and the shy girl who has a secret crush on him. Not to mention all those stereotypical minor characters but I won't go there.

Now the plot. Credit there for some originality in terms of the concept. The spin on the conventional mythology of a dragon was quite interesting. Other than that it was all quite bland and predictable. You have your boy meets girl in a really random scenario, complications arise but ALAS! there's always a solution and then you have your wonderful happy ending. The romance was way too superficial though.

The series was interesting initially with the high action and not so many elements of a harem but after episode 4 (the compulsory beach episode in any harem anime) it kinda of just...died. Episode 9 seemed like somewhat of a filler. The story did seem to be quite fast paced until mid way and then the ending was just too rushed for my liking. There was also way too much story and not enough back story I mean not to spoil the story or anything but they suddenly spring the fact that Onyx and Maruga are childhood friends on you in the last 10 minutes of the entire thing. I mean it's not like it was relevant or anything so WHY?! Ryuji's irrelevant parents also made a cameo in the last 10 minutes. That was weird.

Don't even get me started on the art. That picture I put up there might look amazing but the actual art was pretty drab.

Here you won't find the normal bright colours and nice character designs that you'd usually find in a shounen anime. Everything seemed terribly ordinary so it didn't do too well at keeping my attention. It wasn't eye-catching like say.. Star Driver. The only bright thing in the entire series is Rose's hair... and dragon mark.

COMPARE THE PAIR! Which would you choose?

The animation seemed a little inconsistent at times. Battle scenes seemed lazy and not so dramatic. There were some other pretty strange things I noticed but in case of spoilers, I won't post them. I really had no idea what the hell was going on in the director's mind sometimes.

Now let's consider the music. I actually quite liked the OP but the EP was just ridiculous. I found that the music conveyed the emotion better that the somewhat superficial sounding voice acting.

OVERALL:
+ Points:
  • concept
  • high action, well-paced first couple of episodes
  • in spite of how rushed it was, the ending was nice
  • music
  • non-convoluted, easy to follow plot
  • potential rewatch factor
- Points:
  • predictability
  • slow middle, rushed end
  • character designs, boring colours
  • animation
  • voice-acting
Enjoyment factor:
Using Clannad as a level for boring, this was fairly enjoyable in comparison. It did have it's boring bits but there were entertaining parts to it.

Score: 7/10

Most of the OVAs weren't on my list and one of the series. They've been added to my list which is a bit more extensive than this one in terms of TV series. You can view my list HERE which I have compiled for my own personal reference.

Angel Beats! Licensed

So apparently Angel Beats! has been licensed for release in the US by Sentai Filmworks. I was actually planning on watching this soon but I guess now I'll just wait for the dub to come out. It's not that long a wait either so that's a plus. It'll give me time to crawl through the rest of the anime I have on hold. According to the official website, the first few episodes are set for release at Anime Boston, a convention being held on 22-24 April.

supercell

I was recently introduced to supercell by a cool person. (If you actually read this, HI! You're awesome. Just lettin' you know.) I was just browsing Youtube, as I do, and I happened to come across the Perfect Day PV. I really like the video. It's so cute.

I also really like Love & Roll.

Fortune Arterial: Akai Yakusoku OP : Lia - Kizunairo

This anime seems to have many bad reviews but I'm actually really enjoying it. I don't think it's a bad adaptation of a visual novel at all and since I love to use Clannad as a comparison, I'm going to say this is way more enjoyable. I'm a third of the way through so more on it later. Back to the point. I really like both versions of the OP.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Color of our bonds Heart to heart They will surely lead us to the promised place

I want to say, I can't say

My endless feelings are for you... Ah

If you bring out your courage It's goodbye to those days of being bystander

But the definition of "freedom"

Is swaying like a swing, isn't it?

On the stairs where I wrote my music score I move ahead one step, even if I step back two.

For just a little while, I sing lonliness. Please, feel my reality.

Color of our bonds Heart to heart They will surely lead us to the promised place

I want to say, I can't say I've always been searching for you

Even if, yes, you are the light

And I am the shadow, if we gaze at each other

Hey, I want to let the diamond that is colored like teardrops sparkle from zero.

If I write my nameless hope on an adventurers map

See, you know that the scenario that God decided is a blank piece of paper, right?

If just one of my wishes came true, I won't wander anymore.

Even if it's unbalanced, even if it's clumsy, I will spread my wings and become the wind.

You're dear to me, you're too dear to me. A single drop of love weaves my feelings together.

Don't extinguish the flame of my memories; Those of the past, the future, and the present.

One more time, just one more time

Let me replay those eyes, that time, in my head for eternity.

Even if there are no such things as miracles, I will fly.

I will fly to the sky where my dreams continue to...

It's fine you don't become a legend, you're fine just as you are.

Don't be afraid, tie them together; Your love, your meetings.

Color of our bonds Heart to heart They will surely lead us to the promised place

I want to say, I can't say I've always been searching for you

You're dear to me, you're too dear to me. A single drop of love dyes the color of our bonds.

Don't extinguish the flame of my memories

Because I will bring them together with both of my hands... Ah

It's fine you don't become a legend, you're fine just as you are.

Don't be afraid, tie them together; Your love, your meetings.

It's fine you don't become an angel, you're fine just as you are.

You're not alone

See, if you close your eyes, it's warm

ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE?!

I'm just kidding. It was just an earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Nothing of such a large scale just yet. All the speculations about the cause of such a large amount of natural disasters are really funny. They range from climate change (which I as a matter of fact believe is a total scam) to ZOMBIE APOCALYPSES. Do zombies even exist? My thoughts are with all those who are in Japan and those with family in Japan.

On a less serious note, I probably looked this that this morning when I awoke to find that GOSICK had been delayed. No joke. My Saturday entertainment gone? It was very displeasing. Luckily I had Yumekui Merry but that was boring.

I was however very pleased to see that Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail episode 4 had finally been released after being delayed for so long. I watched the raw version but I was concentrating too much on listening to the audio to actually watch so I didn't really understand what was happening. I hope the subs come out faster this time around.

Hidan no Aria「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 1 2011

Producer:
J.C. Staff (YAY! They did Shakugan no Shana)

Synopsis:
The story takes place in Tokyo Butei High School, a special school where armed detectives — "Butei" — are trained to use weapons. Kinji Tooyama is a second-year-student who has a special ability, but he keeps it a secret to maintain an ordinary, peaceful life. However, when he gets caught in a bombing on the way to school, he encounters H. Aria Kanzaki, the most powerful S-Rank Butei student in Assault Studies.

Genre:
Action, Comedy

My Thoughts:
Oooooh, my tsundere senses are tingling. Seeing the picture of Aria instantly makes me think "TSUNDERE ALERT!" at once. Well, I really like tsunderes as characters. They're so adorable. I don't know why but I'm looking forward to this one the most and it just happens to start airing right in the middle of my half-yearly exams. Great. I guess I just like girls with weapons... because I wish I could be a girl with a weapon. Don't laugh. It's so not funny. Did I mention I like the art style? It reminds me of Shakugan no Shana and Yumekui Merry. I also have this feeling I'll like the main character. We'll just have to see how she stacks up against my other favourite characters.

Some PVs:

Vampire Knight on ABC3

Airing:
Monday - Friday 8pm from March 28 2011

I am beyond excited for this. I checked everyday for the times it was going to air when I found out it was going to air on ABC3 (Obviously you can tell I'm a avid fan of Vampire Knight). Even though I find the manga more enjoyable than the anime, I will be watching it on TV anyway because anime on Australia free TV is such a rarity it's not funny.

On another note, also relating to Vampire Knight, I can't wait for volume 12 of the manga to come out! I read volumes 1-11 in about a week only to discover it ends on kind of a CLIFFHANGER! I could read scanlations if I wanted to but they're so uncool.

Steins;Gate「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 2011

Producer:
Fronteir Works, White Fox

Synopsis:
Steins;Gate is set in the summer of 2010, approximately one year after the events that took place in Chaos;Head, in Akihabara.

Steins;Gate is about a group of friends who have customized their microwave into a device that can send text messages to the past. As they perform different experiments, an organization named SERN who has been doing their own research on time travel tracks them down and now the characters have to find a way to avoid being captured by them.

Genre:
Sci-Fi

My Thoughts:
I had originally thought that it was a continuation of Chaos;Head so I was going to watch it before watching this one. However, I was told that there's nothing similar besides the setting and the fact that the events occur 1 year later. The plot sounds pretty interesting. It sounds to me that there is a lot of scheming and plotting that will be involved in this and I hope it doesn't fall flat on its face like Code Geass did (in my eyes anyway).

Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 11 2011

Producer:
Studio Gallop

Synopsis:
The series is set in the near future. Yuma Tsukumo is the number one bad boy at his school. Something unexpected happens as Ryoga Kamishiro challenges him to a Duel. When the mysterious entity Astral appears before them a new legend begins.

Genre:
Game

My Thoughts:
"A NEW YU-GI-OH! I HOPE THEY DON'T CANCEL THE DUB OF 5D's FOR ZEXAL LIKE THEY DID WITH GX!" Yes, Yu-Gi-Oh! GX was my favourite and they never dubbed season 4 because 4Kids wanted to dub 5D's. I honestly don't know what to expect but I've liked all the other Yu-Gi-Oh! series so I'll probably like this one. In any case, I'll be waiting for the dub even after all the trashing that the 5D's dub got. I actually liked that dub.. and didn't mind the editting.

Dog Days「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 2011

Producer:
Seven Arcs, Aniplex

Synopsis:
Republic of Biscotti faces a predicament by the invasion of Galette Leo Knights. In order to save the country, Princess Milchore summons a "hero" from the outer world. Shinku, a junior high school boy living in the Earth, is chosen as the hero.

Genre:
Action, Supernatural

My Thoughts:
Another original anime from Tsuzuki Masaki? YES! He did the screenplay for Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha which happens to be on of my favourite anime series. The art style is similar too! I really like the hair and the eyes. However, the 'Republic of Biscotti' is a little ridiculous. Biscotti is really nice though. This caught my eye at one when I first looked up the Spring line-up.

Ao no Exorcist 「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 10 2011

Producer:
A-1 Pictures

Synopsis:
This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible. However the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it. Satan the god of demons, but there's one thing that he doesn't have, and that's a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him!! For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will his son agree to his plans? Or will he become something else...? An exorcist?

Genre:
Action, Fantasy, Supernatural

My Thoughts:
The art is kind of interesting and I'm weirdly drawn to it. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a show I can't take seriously like Kore wa Zombie desu ka. Hoping for some epic kick-ass action, interesting mix of characters and a mad plot with no holes.

Sachi Tainaka - Saikou no Kataomoi

I just started watching Saiunkoku Monogatari (The Story of the Land of Many Coloured Clouds) and I really like the ED. Sachi Tainaka's voice is so good. She's got a 3 and a half octave voice range according to Wikipedia. The first note she struck in the song was surprising.

She sounds just as good live. Not many artists can do that.

LYRICS in ENGLISH
You are always so free...
What kind of dream are you chasing in this rain?
While fighting loneliness somewhere
You seem to be holding back tears...

You are the same as me, alright albeit alone...
Even though it's a detour, why do I like this path?

The time is great and I'm happy,
Because I remember you.
This brilliantly colored season will surely
Send you these thoughts.

Longing, liking and hating
What is called 'emotion' differs everywhere...
When you are at the beautiful river,
I want to be there too.

Other than ambiguous words, other than a simple promise,
I long for your hand's warmth and time alone together.

If, in case you are sad,
In case tomorrow isn't in sight -
I want you to rely on me,
And on your feelings, after this.

The time is great and I'm happy,
Because I remember you.
This brilliantly colored season will surely
Send you these thoughts.

[C] The Money of Soul and Possibility Control 「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 8 2011

Producer:
Tatsunoko Productions

Synopsis:
The Japanese government was rescued from the brink of financial collapse by the Sovereign Wealth Fund. For its citizens, however, life has not improved, and unemployment, crime, suicide, and despair are rampant. Kimimaro, raised by his maternal grandmother after the disappearance of his father and the death of his mother, is a scholarship student whose only dream is to avoid all this and live a stable life. One day, however, he meets a man who offers him a large sum of money if he'll agree to pay it back. From then on his fate is radically altered as he's drawn into a mysterious area known as "The Financial District."

Genre:
Sci-fi, Action

My Thoughts:
YES! Finally a break from a slife of life and romance anime. I'm anticipating lots of action. I hope this is going to live up to my expectations. Besides the final two episodes of Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail and Hidan no Aria, I'm really looking forward to this one a lot.

A Channel 「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 2011

Producer:
Studio Gokumi, Aniplex

Synopsis:
The story revolves around the everyday life of four high school girls: the flighty Run, the reckless Tooru, the timid Yuuko, and the level-headed Nagi.

Genre:
School, Comedy, Slice of Life

My Thoughts:
Looks like a rip-off of Lucky Star but I'm going to give it chance. It might be funny and enjoyable.

Hoshizora e Kakaru Hashi 「PREVIEW」

English: A Bridge to the Starry Skies

Airing:
April 2011

Producer:
Dogakobo

Synopsis:
Kazuma has moved to a small town in the country. On his first day at school, he meets Ui when he is lost his way. They go to school together, but Kazuma accidentally slips and kisses Ui.... To make matters worse, Ibuki, Ui's close friend, sees it.... Well, what will happen to his new school life...?

Genre:
Romance, Harem

My Thoughts:
Will be picking up for the romance and potential of a good harem. Not really into the character designs or the short skirts hinting at some ecchi and shit fanservice at random times.

Oretachi ni Tsubasa wa Nai 「PREVIEW」

English: Under the Innocent Sky (Lit. We Don't Have Wings)

Airing:
April 2011

Producer:
Nomad

Synopsis:
A big city filled with people and buildings. It is now winter. When you look up, there is the cold white sky. Young people with anxiety. Love. This is just a story you can find anywhere.
.... Basically a coming of age story.

Genre:
Drama, Fantasy, Romance, Harem

My Thoughts:
It looked like a harem from the picture. I've seen a few now and the only one worth mentioning is Air. Honestly, Clannad was total crap, Kanon was alright, Yosuga no Sora had so much ecchi but I stilled watched it for the incest and Shuffle has some really annoying characters and the first half of the story was stupid. This, however, is a coming of age story and I really like those. They're so nice to watch. Not to mention the nice character designs (really loving the uniforms) in this. I'm really looking forward to this one and hopefully it'll be enjoyable until the end.

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi「PREVIEW」

Airing:
April 2011

Producer:
Studio DEEN

Synopsis:
Onodera Ritsu has just transferred from his father's publishing company to Marukawa Shoten. Assigned to the shoujo manga division, he crosses path with the person he'd least expected to meet. Takano Masamune is the editor-in-chief of the division Ritsu's been assigned to, and the two seem get off on the wrong foot right from the very start when Takano unexpectedly kisses him. However, there is more to than what meets the eye: Takano is actually Saga, Ritsu's senpai and high school love, whom Ritsu had thought to have played him for a fool by taking his affections for granted when he confessed and summarily dumped him.

Genre:
Comedy, Romance, Shounen Ai

My thoughts:
I'll probably be picking this up purely because I'm a sucker for Shounen Ai. Although from the picture, I really like the character designs. The story does kind of sound interesting but there's a possibility it might be total crap and really boring.

Spring 2011 Anime

Even though it's not Spring in Australia, I still refer to the seasons by the seasons in Japan.
